Gilbert Goss Sawtelle
December 30, 1930 - March 2, 2006
Big Spring High School Class of 1948
Gib resided in Alamogordo, NM ,and
formerly El Paso, TX and Big Spring, TX.
Mr. Sawtelle was a member and
president of the El Paso Chapter of A. I. A., El Paso Sheriff’s Posse,
and S.A.R.. He was buried at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery with military
honors. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Infantry, stationed
at Ft. Benning GA and Ft. Bliss, TX.
He was lead architect for R. E. McKee
Contractor and later as a partner of Garland and Hilles Architects. He
was noted for his innovations in design-build methods and for historic
preservation of various El Paso landmarks. He played important roles in
the design of various military facilities; Federal High Speed Test
Track, Holloman AFB, and the U.S. Army Patriot Air Defense Maintenance
Facility at Ft. Bliss, TX.
He was preceded in death by his
parents Gilbert G. Sawtelle and Moree Tolle Sawtelle of Big Spring,
TX. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia; his sons, Gilbert
III, and James F. Sawtelle.
He is
survived also by step-daughter Carolyn Lorraine Posey and
her husband David C. Posey ; by grandchildren Ashley Moree,
Gilbert G. IV, and Erin Hawkins Colby; and by great-granddaughter
Ker’rin Colby.
