This magnificent animal has been
preserved to remind us of the thousands of his kind
who once
freely roamed the open Texas grazing lands. Big
Spring High School "Steers" breathe deeply
of the spirit of strength and freedom of this almost
vanished breed.

A "Steer" in our parlance
can mean a team member at a sporting event, or any
student, any alumnus, or any staff member, depending
on the context. We think we have a unique and
wonderful spirit that unites us with one another (of
course, maybe every school thinks so).
The steer is a part of our school emblem,
incorporated into our Senior rings. A massive
masonry replica is the centerpiece of the school
foyer, shown above right.
